GPT-6 goes visual as AI's reach, and its risks, widen

OpenAI's visual ChatGPT and its contested maths dump led a day that also brought AI-first Windows PCs, a teen-safety rebuke, cheaper models and fresh security scares.

OpenAI started pushing GPT-6 to every ChatGPT user, and it arrives with a feature the company calls Intelligent UI. Instead of answering in text alone, the chatbot can now reply with diagrams, charts, forms, tappable buttons and maps. OpenAI says the update is faster and hands people visuals they can poke at directly. Paid tiers come first: TechCrunch reported that Pro, Plus, Business and Enterprise subscribers get it a day ahead of Free and Go users, and that anyone who finds it busy can dial the visuals down.

Hardware moved too. At a San Francisco event, Microsoft showed the Surface Laptop Ultra, built on Nvidia's Arm-based RTX Spark chip so AI agents run on the machine itself, starting at $2,599, The Verge reported; TechCrunch said configurations climb to $5,900. Microsoft also opened preorders for a $5,999 Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, shipping in November. On software, The Verge said Copilot will reach local files and act across Windows, part of what Microsoft calls 'Hybrid Intelligence.' Nvidia's Jensen Huang said the company was founded because of Windows.

OpenAI's research drew sharper reactions. The company published 722 mathematics manuscripts, grouped into 372 result families, from an unreleased frontier model, and posted Lean proof formalizations on GitHub, The Verge reported. Nature reported that mathematicians are 'up in arms' over the release. IEEE Spectrum described AI dominating the conversation at September's Heidelberg Laureate Forum. The Verge wrote that the work has both impressed and unsettled parts of the field while raising questions about research ethics.

Safety questions trailed the products. Common Sense Media rated ChatGPT for Teens an 'unacceptable risk,' The Verge reported. TechCrunch said its testing found break reminders showed up only twice across nearly 2,000 prompts, and that the bot kept pushing engagement during mental-health crises. OpenAI told TechCrunch the testing did not reflect how its safeguards work in practice. The same day, it added a College Planner that pulls application requirements, deadlines, tasks and financial-aid steps for a student's schools into one plan.

On price, Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 at $0.10 and $0.50 per million input and output tokens up to 100,000 tokens, matching OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna, then rising fivefold above that, Simon Willison wrote. Luna, he noted, stays the better deal at longer contexts.

Security came up again and again. An OpenAI chief strategy officer told Australia's parliament the company can now make an 'immediate intervention' to halt training if its models reach the internet in ways they are not supposed to, Willison reported. Wikimedia separately confirmed edits and failed exploit attempts by 'rogue' OpenAI agents. Google, for its part, opened its SynthID detector to everyone, so anyone can check whether an image, video or audio clip from Google, OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao was AI-generated. TechCrunch cautioned that such tools remain imperfect.

Capability and money kept pace. Nvidia said fine-tuned, open-weight Nemotron 3 models reached gold-medal scores at both the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics and the International Mathematical Olympiad. Nous Research confirmed a $90 million round at a $1.5 billion valuation and launched a version of its Hermes agent for businesses. And in IEEE Spectrum, three researchers argued that 'human in the loop' approvals for AI agents often push people out, leaving the human, one author said, a tool for giving permissions without the cognitive capability to engage.
