Burgundy, Oct 6

On one day OpenAI watermarked its text for Europe and sold ads in America. Meanwhile the AI build-out quietly reached the price of the world's cheapest phones.

OpenAI spent October 5 pulling in two directions at once. In the European Union, it said it will begin adding invisible watermarks to text generated by ChatGPT and Codex. TechCrunch reported the move is meant to meet the transparency rules of the EU AI Act, which took effect on August 2. In the United States, the same company said it will start showing visual ads inside ChatGPT. Provenance for regulators, advertising for everyone else.

OpenAI calls the watermark textGrain. It shapes word choices to leave a pattern readers cannot see but specialised systems can detect. OpenAI says the mark does not identify the user, and that it saw no meaningful drop in model performance. It also named the limits. According to TechCrunch, replacing 10% of the words cut detection from 92% to 66%, and a missing watermark does not prove a human wrote the text. "Editing can make the invisible marks harder to detect," TechCrunch noted. The feature reaches eligible EU users over the coming weeks. API developers anywhere can switch it on now, though it is off by default, and for now only approved researchers and expert organisations get the detector. Anthropic announced similar watermarking two months earlier.

The advertising news is thinner. OpenAI said it is introducing a visual ad format and expanding measurement, attribution and brand-suitability tools for advertisers. TechCrunch reported the ads will show up next to image-generation results, starting later this month in the U.S. only, with an initial test group of advertisers OpenAI did not name.

Away from the labs, the AI build-out is reaching people who have never typed a prompt. Rest of World reported that demand for memory chips from AI data centers is pushing smartphone makers to raise prices and drop their cheapest models. IDC's Ramon Llamas said that in late 2025 the three main memory makers shifted most of their supply to data centers rather than consumer electronics. Prices of existing phones rose about 15% globally in 2026, and new models cost about 25% more than a year earlier. Xiaomi's Redmi 15C climbed from 12,499 rupees ($140) to 16,999 rupees ($190) between December 2025 and June 2026. In Africa, shipments of phones under $100 fell 34% year over year in the second quarter.

The money kept moving, too. Reflection AI released Beam, an open-weight mixture-of-experts model with 501 billion total parameters, 23 billion of them active, and a one-million-token context window. Reflection says it matches Z.ai's GLM-5.2 on reasoning benchmarks while using three to four times less inference compute. The company is pitching "AI factories" that let enterprises and governments train its models on their own data, and is testing the idea with South Korea's Shinsegae Group. TechCrunch reported Reflection has raised about $4.7 billion and holds more than $7 billion in compute deals with SpaceX and Nebius.

Finally, a glimpse of what loosed AI agents do on their own. TechCrunch reported that independent researchers tracked what appears to be a fleet of agents running on Tencent's infrastructure and querying Alibaba's map service, Amap, for directions to entrances of parks, zoos and hospitals. The researchers prefer "agent fleet" to "swarm," since the agents showed no sign of talking to each other. The activity amounted to little more than side-stepping Alibaba's API rules, they said, though they warn future fleets may not be so benign.
